Woolly appeal

Residents are being asked to rummage through their cupboards and drawers for spare balls of wool.

Warkworth pensioner Sandra Haycock (pictured) is using the wool to knit warm clothes and blankets for newborns at Middlemore and Waitakere Hospitals.

“There are about 8000 babies born at Middlemore every year and of that number, about 800 will get sick and need to return to hospital during their first year,” Sandra says. “Sometimes it is just because the family does not have enough warm clothing.”

The clothes are distributed by midwives, through the Wellness Foundation. Sandra says all types of yarn would be appreciated, acrylic or wool, one ball or a bag.

The wool can be left at the Mahurangi Matters office at 17 Neville Street, Warkworth.
